SUMMARY:The Elaine Massacre
DESCRIPTION:The Elaine Massacre \nPresented by Dr. Brian Mitchell \nIn September of 1919\, black sharecroppers attended a meeting of the Progressive Farmers & Household Union at a church just north of Elaine. The objective was to accomplish competitive prices for their cotton. Instead\, they found the church surrounded\, ending in a shootout with white supremacist farmers. Posses & nightriders were sent out. Black farmers were hunted & shot by white mobs. U S troops were called in & created stockades to house their prisoners. Hundreds (unknown) black farmers\, including a WWI hero\, were killed\, with only 5 white deaths. The deadliest racial confrontation in Arkansas\, possibly the bloodiest in the US. \nBrian’s presentation explores the Life and Legacy of the youngest member of the Elaine Twelve. In Giles’ brief life\, he would go from Sharecropper\, to Death Row inmate\, and would ultimately die in Springfield\, Illinois. \nFormer Director of Research and Interpretation for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum\, Dr. Brian Mitchell\, is a noted scholar of “Difficult History.” Mitchell taught African American and Public History at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for fifteen years before relocating to Springfield\, Illinois. The author of several books\, book chapters\, and papers. DESCRIPTION:Unknown Until Now–The Ongoing Effort to Identify the\nDead in the Fredericksburg National Cemetery \nPresented by Peter Maugle\, Park Ranger\nFredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park \nThe Fredericksburg National Cemetery was established in 1866 and remained open for military burials until 1945. It holds the remains of 15\,414 soldiers\, sailors and Marines who mostly died during the Civil War. At least 85% of the graves are unidentified\, resulting in over 12\,770 unknowns (the most of any cemetery in the U.S.) During this program\, we will learn about unique aspects of this cemetery and recent efforts to identify some of the unknowns without exhumation or DNA analysis. \nPeter Maugle is a native of Bethlehem\, PA with a B.A. in history from Penn State. He worked as a park ranger at Valley Forge National Historical Park for six years and is currently stationed at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. It really depends on you and what you want to do.\n\nCraig Roberts Scott\, MA\, CG\, FUGA is the author of seventeen books and several articles in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly\, the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy and other genealogical publications. He is the President and CEO of Heritage Books\, Inc.\, a genealogical publishing firm with over 8\,500 titles in print. A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than thirty-five years\, he specializes in military records\, problem-solving\, Quakers\, and publishing. He is a member of the Company of Military Historians and on the editorial board of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly. Patti is the coordinator for the course “Genetics for Genealogists: Fundamentals of DNA” at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR). SUMMARY:Breaking a Brick Wall: From Freedom to Slavery
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Abbott\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nDr. Deborah Abbott is bringing to us yet another of her amazing methodologies!  NO ONE does methodology better! \n\n\n\nThe most difficult part of genealogical research for African Americans is finding and identifying enslaved ancestors and their enslavers. For many people whose families were held in bondage\, the task can become overwhelming\, but as difficult as this might seem\, it is not impossible. This lecture will focus on the clues\, resources\, and methods needed to reconstruct an African American ancestor’s journey from freedom to slavery\, including the importance of using U.S. Federal Census records\, the FAN club\, vital records\, and records of the potential enslaver. \n\n\n\nDeborah A. Abbott\, PhD\, is a professional genealogist specializing in genealogical methodology\, manuscript collections\, and African American family research. She is a member of the Cuyahoga County (OH) Archives Commission\, the Lakeview Cemetery Community Outreach Committee (Cleveland\, OH)\, a past president of the African American Genealogical Society (Cleveland\, OH)\, and a retired professor of Counseling from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland. She holds both a BS and an MEd from Tuskegee University and a PhD from Kent State University. \n\n\n\nDr. Abbott is the coordinator of the African American Track at both the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) in Athens\, Georgia\, and the GRIP Genealogy Institute of the National Genealogical Society. She teaches at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) and the Texas Institute of Genealogical Research (TIGR). \n\n\n\nDr. Abbott has articles published in the Ohio Genealogy News and Family Tree magazines. She can be found teaching African American genealogy in the “Needles & Threads” segment on Ancestry Academy\, an educational video course on Ancestry.com. Our ancestors were no different. Hurricanes\, tornadoes\, coal inversions\, ice storms\, etc. played havoc with crops and lives. On the other hand\, the sun and rain helped to produce the items necessary for subsistence. The weather\, during certain time periods\, could give you a clue as to why you can’t find your ancestor; one reason – they may have moved. This presentation will examine the various ways our ancestors were affected by the weather including folklore\, weather phenomena\, climate driven migration\, military conflicts\, National Weather Bureau\, on- and off-line resources\, and more. \n\n\n\n Ann Staley\, CG®\, CGL®\, is an educator\, consultant\, and lecturer. DESCRIPTION:Sharon Batiste Gillins\n\n\n\nSharon Batiste Gillins has been actively involved in genealogical research and teaching for more than 30 years. She frequently delivers lectures and workshops at regional genealogy conferences and national genealogy institutes. Her research and teaching focus on African Americans in the 19th Century through the mid-20th century\, including the Freedmen’s Bureau\, Southern Claims Commission\, probate records\, and Juneteenth history to reveal the lives of enslaved persons\, free people of color\, and southern planters. Her work with slave-era manuscripts encourages more open communication and information exchange between families holding private manuscripts that document the presence of enslavers and/or enslaved people.  \n\n\n\nShe has taught at many of the country’s most recognized genealogy conferences and institutes\, including the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR)\, Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG)\, Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP)\, RootsTech\, and numerous regional genealogy societies and research groups. Attendees will gain insight into research strategies for reconstructing marginalized lives and addressing record gaps to discover the life stories of minority women traditionally overlooked by history. \n\n\n\nCarly Lane Morgan is a Chinese-American genealogist and educator\, and she founded Family Tree Notebooks\, a digital system for organizing and presenting family history. Her work centers on recovering the stories of families often overlooked in historical records. DESCRIPTION:Diana Chrisman-Smith\n\n\n\nDiana has been researching her ancestry since age 10\, speaking since 1980\, and writing\, teaching\, and researching for clients since the late 1980s. She and her husband served as lay librarians at the Westlake\, Ohio\, Family History Center (now FamilySearch Center) for over 20 years.  \n\n\n\nShe has written for numerous genealogical publications\, including a regular column in the NGS NewsMagazine and the APG Quarterly; she was a frequent contributor to Digital Genealogist Magazine\, as well as penning a regular column that ran for two years in the Cleveland Sun. In addition\, Diana also wrote “Finding Your Danish Ancestors: A Primer for Research & History” (2015)\, “Chapter 4: Scandinavia” in The Family Tree Guidebook to Europe (2013)\, and transcriptions of Green County and Shelby County\, Iowa\, Cemetery Records (2021). Strauss\, MA\, AG®\, AGL™\n\n\n\nMichael Strauss is a military historian and professional genealogist.  He serves as an expert witness in court cases involving kinship determinations and forensic estate investigations. He lectures at universities\, conferences\, and educational institutes across the country. He has a B.A. in History from Shepherd University\, with a focus on the American Civil War\, and an M.A. in History from the University of Massachusetts Boston\, with a concentration in military history. His master’s thesis\, Ever Under Steam: The Revenue Cutter Service in the Spanish-American War\, explored the predecessor of the United States Coast Guard\, which was not formally established until 1915. Publications include books\, edited volumes\, peer-reviewed journal articles\, public history writings\, blogs\, and book reviews. \n\n\n\nHe is an Accredited Genealogist with the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists and a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists. \n\n\n\nA Zoom link will be sent to members and mailing list subscribers the morning of the meeting.

SUMMARY:Digitizing History & the Veteran Bounty Lands Project
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Whitman Koford\, CG\, CGL\n\n\n\nRebecca Whitman Koford focuses her research in Maryland\, Upstate New York\, Virginia\, the District of Columbia\, colonial records\, military records from the Revolution through the Civil War\, federal records at the National Archives (D.C.)\, and land records of all types. She has published articles in the NGS Magazine\, APG Magazine\, SAR Magazine\, and the Maryland Genealogical Society Journal and is co-author of the NGS Research in the States series book on Maryland. She is a graduate and former mentor of the ProGen Study Group and served as its Administrator from 2015 to 2020. She speaks at national conferences and regularly teaches at institutes\, most recently the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) and the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR). She served as Executive Director of the Board for Certification of Genealogists® from 2018 to 2024. In 2021\, she was named Director of the Genealogical Institute on Federal Records (Gen-Fed) in Washington\, D.C.
