SUMMARY:Using Narrative "Blueprints" to Structure Writing Projects
DESCRIPTION:Using Narrative “Blueprints” to Structure Writing Projects \npresented by Kim Richardson\, Tennessee Genealogical Society \nSay farewell to the dreaded writer’s block when confronted with a blank screen. This presentation explores a unique method that makes any writing process easier and stress-free. The session teaches how to create a visual framework\, or “blueprint\,” for narratives\, proofs\, and biographies. This technique assists in constructing a written draft\, enables smooth reorganization\, and ensures clarity and conciseness. \nThis method goes beyond broad concept-outlining and ultimately crafts a detailed sketch of the narrative BEFORE typing on the computer begins. Writers will plug in pieces of information and identify which to include and exclude. The pieces of information can then be reorganized to find the best possible arrangement for presenting material to the audience. Sentences are also formulated to use in the first draft which defeats writer’s block. The result is a narrative “blueprint” which can be effortlessly transformed into a well-structured\, polished final version of a written narrative. \nKim Richardson enjoys serving the genealogy community by coaching and enabling others to do their own research successfully. She assists other genealogists to accomplish their goals and helps clients solve genealogy mysteries. Kim created the Brick Wall Buster Cards to show others her secret to solving tough genealogy problems. She also wrote the “Mississippi Research Guide” for Family Tree Magazine and researches for Finding Your Roots and Who Do You Think You Are? \nCompany: Brick Wall Buster Cards\nURL: www.brickwallbustercards.com \nHANDOUT \nCHAT \n

DESCRIPTION:My Great-grandfather:\nHis Letters Home from the Civil War and Other Stories \npresented by David W. Bash \nThrough 50 letters written home from his Civil War service and other memorabilia\, was my great-grandfather William G. Kendrick arrogant\, narcissistic\, a daredevil\, or just telling it as he really was? Maybe all four traits or maybe just boasting to his wife? Zoom in and determine it for yourself. \nDavid Bash\, Ph.D.\, earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics in 1969. After teaching for a few years\, he became interested in applying mathematics instead of teaching it – especially after having a fellowship sponsored by the National Science Foundation about applied mathematics for college professors of mathematics. His major career was as an Operations Research Analyst with the US Army doing war game development and nuclear weapons effects analysis. David is also a long-standing member of the Civil War Roundtable of Arkansas & Heritage Seekers. \nHandout \nCHAT \nMembers\, please login to see the video:Zoom meeting video:\n\n

SUMMARY:The Importance of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Belonging \npresented by Diana Crisman Smith \nMany people seem to believe that joining organizations is out of style and unnecessary.  In the case of genealogical societies\, however\, Diana strongly disagrees.  There are many reasons to join societies\, and there is something for everyone somewhere. We’ll discuss various types of societies and what’s in them for YOU. AND why they need YOU. \nDiana Crisman Smith has been researching since childhood and has served as a lay librarian at her local Family History Center for more than 20 years. She has been active as a researcher\, speaker\, writer and teacher since the 1980s. \nSince 2010 she has written online courses on a variety of topics including: Land Records\, Civil War Pension Records\, Military Records\, Death Records\, RootsMagic\, Danish Research Basics and Scandinavian Research. She currently has two courses at Lisa Alzo’s ResearchWriteConnect Academy; Using City Directories and Vital Events 101\, with more to come. She has also done crash courses on her favorite Midwestern states. \nShe has written for numerous genealogical publications\, including current regular columns in the National Genealogical Society News Magazine and the Association of Professional Genealogists’ APG Quarterly and contributions to a wide range of local and national periodicals. Diana penned a genealogy column that ran for two years in the 27 editions of the Cleveland (Ohio) Sun Newspapers and is the listed author of Finding Your Danish Ancestors: A Primer for Research & History from Heritage Productions\, Toronto\, Canada. \nDiana and her late husband enjoyed speaking at conferences around the country (and at sea) for the past 30+ years and she is now expanding her genealogical endeavors—speaking\, writing\, teaching and researching—after concluding a career in software consulting. She hopes to get back to sea for another genealogy cruise one of these days. \nHandout \nChat 1 \nChat 2 \n

SUMMARY:When Hell Came to Sharpsburg
DESCRIPTION:When Hell Came to Sharpsburg \npresented by Steve Cowie\, author \nThe Battle of Antietam\, fought in and around Sharpsburg\, Maryland\, on September 17\, 1862\, was the bloodiest day in American history. Despite the large number of books and articles on the subject\, the horrendous effect that the battle had on area civilians is rarely discussed. When Hell Came to Sharpsburg by Steven Cowie rectifies this oversight. \nBy the time the battle ended that day\, more than 23\,000 men had been killed\, wounded\, or captured in just a dozen hours of combat—a grim statistic that tells only part of the story. The epicenter of that deadly day was the small community of Sharpsburg. Families lived\, worked\, and worshipped there. It was their home. And the horrific fighting and its aftermath turned their lives upside down. \n     When Hell Came to Sharpsburg investigates how the battle and its armies wreaked emotional\, physical\, and financial havoc on the people of Sharpsburg. For proper context\, the author explores the savage struggle and its gory aftermath and explains how soldiers stripped the community of resources and spread diseases. Cowie meticulously follows fortunes of individual families—ordinary folk thrust into harrowing circumstances—and their struggle to recover from their unexpected and often devastating losses. \nSteven Cowie earned a degree from California State University\, Long Beach. As part of the Los Angeles film industry\, he penned spec screenplays and sold his award-winning short film to the Sundance Channel. A lifelong student of the Civil War\, Cowie dedicated fifteen years to exclusively researching the Battle of Antietam. When Hell Came to Sharpsburg is his first book. \nSharpsburg-Chat1  Chat2 \nMembers\, please login to see the video:Zoom meeting video:

SUMMARY:For Every Family\, A Family Doctor Dr Sam Taggart
DESCRIPTION:For Every Family\, A Family Doctor \npresented by Dr Sam Taggart \nFamily Doctors hold a special place in our lives.  The family physician is often the narrator\, father confessor\, the soul who is there for families from birth to death; the person who is called in time of need. One principal trait is trust\, trust to do the right thing\, trust to be there when he is needed. Wisdom is another of those traits that sets them apart. \nFor the first 150 years of Arkansas’s existence\, physician care was provided by family physicians who did most of the surgery\, obstetrics\, pediatrics\, and medical care. In the first half of the 20th century\, medical education shifted its emphasis to training specialists and by the 1940s Arkansas was beginning to experience a dramatic decrease in the numbers of family doctors. In 1947\, the Arkansas Academy of General Practice was created\, and\, in 1970\, it morphed into the Arkansas Academy of Family Physicians.   Slowly\, over the last 75 years\, the Arkansas Academy has worked hard to increase the numbers of family physicians in the state and provide them with the continuing education needed to keep up-to-date.. For Every Family\, A Family Doctor is a narrative history of the Modern Family Medicine Movement in Arkansas. The lion’s share of the book is told through the lives of the men and women who led this movement. \nSam Taggart is a family doctor\, raised in the White River Delta in Augusta\, Arkansas. After medical school at UAMS\, he completed a Family Practice Residency. He retired in 2013 as the senior partner and founder of Family Practice Associates of Benton. In 2012 he wrote The Public’s Health\, describing a narrative history of health and disease in Arkansas over the last 200 years. \n     For Every Family\, A Family Doctor began as a series of interviews\, recorded during 2018-2022\, looking at the lives and practices of the family doctors of Arkansas over the last seventy-five years. This series was produced by the Arkansas Physician’s Oral History Project\, created in 2015. This is the second project for this group.  In June of 2021 he published Country Doctors of Arkansas\, as one of the products of that study. In April 2023\, he published For Every Family\, A Family Doctor a narrative history of the modern family medicine movement in Arkansas since 1947. \nHe and his wife\, Dr. Annette Enderlin are presently working on a book called Against the Odds: Arkansas Women in Medicine before 1972. \nChat 1 – A Family Doctor \nChat 2  – A Family Doctor \nMembers\, please login to see the video:Zoom meeting video:

SUMMARY:Shakin’ Out the Smiths: Researching a Common Surname
DESCRIPTION:Shakin’ Out the Smiths: Researching a Common Surname \npresented by Nancy Calhoun\, Oklahoma \nMany of our genealogy brick walls come from common surnames on our family trees. The speaker is no exception with a mother named Ann Smith. She will share some tips and tricks for overcoming this obstacle\, using examples from her over 40 years of Smith research across four states. Some include examples of what NOT to do. It ends with a surprise for everyone\, including the speaker. \nNancy Calhoun has been chasing relatives for over 40 years. While in Teacher Corps and graduate school in Kansas\, she enrolled in a semester long genealogy class and has been pursuing family\, both her own and others’ since that time. She found it to be a perfect combination with her bachelor degrees (history\, English\, vocational home economics with a minor in photography) and a masters in curriculum and instruction. With a teaching background and 20 years in newspaper work and publishing\, she often used her research skills in the classroom and in writing. \nNancy was the Department Head of Genealogy and Local History at Muskogee Public Library in Muskogee\, Oklahoma\, for 13 years when she went to work for Oklahoma Historical Society. She then retired due to a stroke. \nShe has attended several NGS and FGS national conferences\, in addition to area educational opportunities. She was the recipient of the librarian scholarship to attend IGHR and the Richard S. Lackey Memorial Scholarship for the 2017 session of Genealogical Institute on Federal Records. Her writings have placed in the annual contests held by the International Association of Family History Writers and Editors. \nMemberships include APG\, NGS\, DAR\, United Daughters of the War of 1812\, United Daughters of the Confederacy\, Oklahoma’s First Families of the Twin Territories\, First Families of Wythe County\, Virginia\, Mayflower Society\, and several county and state genealogical organizations. She is a board member of the Oklahoma Genealogical Society and Gen-Fed Alumni. Speaking opportunities have taken her all over Oklahoma and into Arkansas and Texas. Since the pandemic and a stroke\, she is doing Zoom presentation for Texas\, Oklahoma and California societies. \nHer personal research includes Texas\, Virginia\, Tennessee\, and Kentucky\, as well as Oklahoma. \nShakin Out the Smiths Chat \nRunning Down Grandma: Researching Your Female Ancestors Handout \nShakin’ Out the Smiths handout \n
