SUMMARY:When Hell Came to Sharpsburg
DESCRIPTION:When Hell Came to Sharpsburg \npresented by Steve Cowie\, author \nThe Battle of Antietam\, fought in and around Sharpsburg\, Maryland\, on September 17\, 1862\, was the bloodiest day in American history. Despite the large number of books and articles on the subject\, the horrendous effect that the battle had on area civilians is rarely discussed. When Hell Came to Sharpsburg by Steven Cowie rectifies this oversight. \nBy the time the battle ended that day\, more than 23\,000 men had been killed\, wounded\, or captured in just a dozen hours of combat—a grim statistic that tells only part of the story. The epicenter of that deadly day was the small community of Sharpsburg. Families lived\, worked\, and worshipped there. It was their home. And the horrific fighting and its aftermath turned their lives upside down. \n     When Hell Came to Sharpsburg investigates how the battle and its armies wreaked emotional\, physical\, and financial havoc on the people of Sharpsburg. For proper context\, the author explores the savage struggle and its gory aftermath and explains how soldiers stripped the community of resources and spread diseases. Cowie meticulously follows fortunes of individual families—ordinary folk thrust into harrowing circumstances—and their struggle to recover from their unexpected and often devastating losses. \nSteven Cowie earned a degree from California State University\, Long Beach. As part of the Los Angeles film industry\, he penned spec screenplays and sold his award-winning short film to the Sundance Channel. A lifelong student of the Civil War\, Cowie dedicated fifteen years to exclusively researching the Battle of Antietam. When Hell Came to Sharpsburg is his first book. \nSharpsburg-Chat1  Chat2 \nMembers\, please login to see the video:Zoom meeting video:

SUMMARY:The Importance of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Belonging \npresented by Diana Crisman Smith \nMany people seem to believe that joining organizations is out of style and unnecessary.  In the case of genealogical societies\, however\, Diana strongly disagrees.  There are many reasons to join societies\, and there is something for everyone somewhere. We’ll discuss various types of societies and what’s in them for YOU. AND why they need YOU. \nDiana Crisman Smith has been researching since childhood and has served as a lay librarian at her local Family History Center for more than 20 years. She has been active as a researcher\, speaker\, writer and teacher since the 1980s. \nSince 2010 she has written online courses on a variety of topics including: Land Records\, Civil War Pension Records\, Military Records\, Death Records\, RootsMagic\, Danish Research Basics and Scandinavian Research. She currently has two courses at Lisa Alzo’s ResearchWriteConnect Academy; Using City Directories and Vital Events 101\, with more to come. She has also done crash courses on her favorite Midwestern states. \nShe has written for numerous genealogical publications\, including current regular columns in the National Genealogical Society News Magazine and the Association of Professional Genealogists’ APG Quarterly and contributions to a wide range of local and national periodicals. Diana penned a genealogy column that ran for two years in the 27 editions of the Cleveland (Ohio) Sun Newspapers and is the listed author of Finding Your Danish Ancestors: A Primer for Research & History from Heritage Productions\, Toronto\, Canada. \nDiana and her late husband enjoyed speaking at conferences around the country (and at sea) for the past 30+ years and she is now expanding her genealogical endeavors—speaking\, writing\, teaching and researching—after concluding a career in software consulting. She hopes to get back to sea for another genealogy cruise one of these days. \nHandout \nChat 1 \nChat 2 \n
